Silent Movement - Our gap year travelling the inland waterways

Thursday 3 May 2012

On the move again

Yesterday morning we had just finished breakfast and were discussing backing up the navigation from Weybridge Town Lock to get water when the Lock Keeper from Thames Lock knocked on the cabin. Around his neck was slung the 'red board' and chain that had been securing the lock gate. Good News - the water levels had come down, the flow was calming and the navigation was now open again.

It could still be a few days before the Thames is safe to travel on, so we went down through the lock, turned and back up so we could get up to Pyrford where we could make use of all the services. We then decided to keep going and moored up at Send for the night at a nice quiet spot we used before. It was lovely to be moving again. And to have a full water tank and empty loo!

Waking up we heard a Cuckoo calling, the first one we've heard this year. This morning was grey and wet, so it was a slow start doing a few cleaning jobs, a walk round the village with Jumble then we set off again, we decided to go back to Godalming.
Triggs Lock
The river is flowing faster than it was last week and we were going against the flow, so sometimes it was slow progress.

We only saw a couple of boats moving, they were making their way to The New Inn at Send ready for  Byfleet Boat Club's Weyside 2012 Festival this weekend.
Swifts lining up and swooping round. 1st ones I've seen this year.
Through Guildford once again, and at Shalford we just  squeezed under the road bridge, with only a mm to spare! Good thing we could creep along against the flow. Coming back we shall have to check level first - 14 bricks on bridge wall!

So now we are again moored at Godalming Wharf, the furthest South we can go on the Inland Waterways.

Weybridge - Godalming (2 days)

  1. You're totally out of my known territory. I have to keep checking the map to find out where you are. I think the closest I've ever been to your current location is Crawley (for one day, the whole of which I spent in a sports centre!) :)
